All children are different ...

... and in our house, Deckles takes the cake. He is one busy little man, a man in motion. Neither Andrew or Kathleen were anywhere near this busy. We will have to see what Sean brings to the table when he is older.

It dawned on me a few days ago that we should hide the car keys. Deckles likes to drive. Everytime we go to get in the car, he has a fit about not wanting to go back to his carseat in the third row, but that he wants to drive. He does really want to drive. I do think that he, in the relatively near term, could swipe the keys from their current home, and walk out the front door. (Not quite yet, the locked door would stop him right now - he has never (yet) left the house unaccompanied.) I am certain with his imagination and skills that putting a key in a ignition and starting the engine would be no big deal. Now wondering whether we should put the hand brake on the manual car?

Deckles climbs - brings his car over, and just climbs up on stuff. A few days ago, he reappeared with his mouth stuffed with chocolate brownies. He loves chocolate so he served himself. Kathleen's bunk bed - a free-for-all of fun. He has come off the ladder a few times.

Deckles will run straight away from you, no turning back. The idea of separation isn't a concept that concers him. The downfall - our little townhouse is a t-shaped street that runs into a very very busy road. Deckles would just keep on running. At the school yard, no peaceful moments of chit-chat with the other parents - I am chasing the boy. Going down the 'mountain climbing' wall on the playground equipment is fun to him (thankful for the diaper butt provides padding for the rough descent).

I don't worry too much about the future affects of this man in motion because the feedback from daycare (unbiased and depth of experience with this age group) raves about his personality. He is very polite, his language skills are advanced compared to his peers, his attention span is long (when engaged, which isn't that difficult), his eating (skills and variety) extraordinary - he is just busy.

I think, like most two year olds, Deckles rules his castle. Just in his case, his castle is a bit larger than most.
