Is he older than me?

Last week, the family was driving to school and to work. [As an aside, this is a new adventure for our family as all of us are now working or schooling in downtown Toronto so we all hop in the minivan for the trip as a family of five each morning.] Kathleen enjoys organizing our family's birthdays and benchmarks events to each of our birthdays. We have recently started telling her that the next birthday is Jesus' birthday on Christmas Day. We are not a religious family and don't attend any church services so our children are rather blind to the Christian religion, the birth of Christ and the real meaning of Christmas. Kathleen was quite baffled by this new individual Jesus and proceeded to involve us in the following conversation:

K - Is he older than me?
Us - Jesus lived a long time ago and is much much older than you.
K - Is he alive or dead?
Us - Kathleen, he died a long time ago, over 2,000 years ago.
K - Is that close to infinity?
Us - Not quite, but a long time ago.

Despite having very little connection to the Christian faith, I am committed to raising my children with a knowledge of the Christian faith as well as the other faiths that make up our community. We should start with the Christian faith given our background is Christianity and we follow the traditional Christian holidays as a family. I started reading a child's version of the Bible a few years ago but have focused on the Old Testament. The stories are much more interesting but I guess we should introduce Jesus to the children. I think we have a bit of work.
